Triple Entendre

Triple Entendre discusses the rise and spread of background music in contexts as diverse as office workplaces, shopping malls, and musical performance. Hervé Vanel examines background music in several guises, including Erik Satie's "Furniture Music" of the late 1910s and early 1920s, which first demonstrated the idea of a music not meant to be listened to, and the Muzak Corporation's commercialized ambient music that became a predominant feature of modern life in the 1940s. Vanel's discussion culminates in the creative response of the composer John Cage to the pervasiveness and power of background music in contemporary society. By examining the subterranean connections existing between these three formulations of a singular idea, Triple Entendre analyzes and challenges the crucial boundary that separates an artistic concept from its actual implementation in life.

Tolstoy and the Genesis of War and Peace

Kathryn B. Feuer offers remarkable insights into Leo Tolstoy's creative process while he wrote War and Peace. She follows the novel through countless drafts and notes, illuminating its connection to earlier, unpublished, novels and to crucial new sources, both European and Russian. A novelist herself, Feuer explores the problems of character development, narrative voice, genre, and structure that Tolstoy ultimately resolved so brilliantly.

In 11 essays, provides parameters for the historical and sociological context of the movement; its manifestation in visual arts, theater, the media, and literature; the correspondence between the actual works and the various manifestos; and the relevance of studying the phenomenon to present concerns. Art and the Everyday

This book examines the early twentieth-century movement that was sparked by the premiere of Erik Satie's ballet Parade in May 1917. Perloff argues that Satie and his colleagues, including Darius Millhaud, Francis Poulenc, Max Jacob, and Jean Cocteau, led French music away from Impressionism by infusing their compositions with French and American popular idioms. They also adopted aesthetic principles of parody, diversity, nostalgia, and repetition from the Parisian cabaret, cafe-concert, circus, fair, and music hall. With their collaborators Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, and Francis Picabia, they shared a radical disregard for traditional divisions separating popular and classical forms of creative expression."
